Bulldogs Decide To Make A Change After Disappointing Season Start

Mississippi State Fires Head Football Coach Zach Arnett After Less Than a Season

Bulldogs Decide to Make a Change After Disappointing Season Start

Arnett Compiled a 4-6 Record in his First Season at the Helm

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State University has decided to part ways with head football coach Zach Arnett. The announcement comes just two days after the Bulldogs suffered a 51-7 loss to Arkansas, dropping their record to 4-6 overall and 1-6 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Arnett was hired in December 2022 to replace Mike Leach, who died unexpectedly in December 2022. Arnett came to Mississippi State from New Mexico, where he had been the head coach for the previous five seasons.

In his first season at Mississippi State, Arnett's team struggled to find consistency. The Bulldogs started the season with a 3-1 record but lost their last five games of the season, including a 42-24 loss to rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl.

Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen said in a statement that the decision to fire Arnett was made after a "thorough evaluation" of the program.

"We appreciate Coach Arnett's dedication to Mississippi State and his commitment to our student-athletes," Cohen said. "However, after careful consideration, we have decided to make a change in the leadership of our football program."

Offensive coordinator Jason Washington has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
