Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus: An Autoimmune Skin Disorder

What is Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus?

Cutaneous lupus erythematodes (CLE) is a rare inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects the skin. It is characterized by red, scaly patches on the skin that can be sensitive to sunlight. CLE is a type of lupus erythematosus, which is a group of autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation in different parts of the body.

Symptoms of Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

The most common symptom of CLE is a red, scaly rash on the skin. The rash can appear on any part of the body, but it is most commonly found on the face, neck, and hands. The rash can be itchy and painful, and it can sometimes blister or ulcerate.

Other symptoms of CLE can include:

  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Fever

Causes of Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

The exact cause of CLE is unknown, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disease. This means that the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. In the case of CLE, the immune system attacks the skin cells.

CLE is more common in women than in men. It is also more common in people with certain genetic factors. Some medications can also trigger CLE, such as antibiotics and anti-seizure medications.

Treatment for Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

There is no cure for CLE, but treatment can help to control the symptoms. Treatment options may include:

  • Topical medications, such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors
  • Oral medications, such as hydroxychloroquine and azathioprine
  • Light therapy
  • Surgery

Outlook for Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

The outlook for people with CLE is generally good. With treatment, most people are able to control their symptoms and live a normal life. However, some people with CLE may develop more serious complications, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). SLE is a more serious autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organs in the body.
